This past weekend I made time to do a detail which I have been planning to do for a long time coming.
The subject in question was not a car but a boat, owned by my parents in-law in Langebaan. We left work a bit early on Friday afternoon and after packing some clothes, food & drinks and hooking up my detailing trailer to the Freelander, we left for Langebaan.

We had to collect the boat from the place where it is stored when not used and reversing it into the 30 odd meter driveway was a task on its own…

Anyway, after parking the boat, I planned the work for the next day and then we had a few sundowner drinks and a nice dinner.

Saturday morning started with a rinse down of the boat and engine covers with a strong APC and CG maxi Suds 2 solution. Unfortunately, the boat cover has had a fair share of abuse from the sun, and did not really show a big improvement, but the engine covers came out looking like new.

Some before and after pics with the covers still on:

After removing the covers, I gave the complete boat and both engines a wash down with a mild APC and CG maxi Suds 2 solution. The paint work was in a relative good condition, apart from a few marks from bumping the odd tyre on a jetty…

While I was busy preparing for the polish phase, the neighbors (standing on their balcony) alerted me that I had a “visitor” on the way…
[Image: PB130952.jpg] [Image: PB130953.jpg]

… and another less scary one…

After all that excitement I sectioned the left hull of the boat into workable areas.

[Image: PB130959.jpg] [Image: PB130960.jpg]

I tried various different combos, and ended up using the Meguiars M95 with orange pad on the Shinex, followed by Menz Final Finish on a black pad on the DA. After completing both sides, I topped it off with Collinite 476.

Some afters:

Thereafter I gave the engines a similar treatment, but topped off with PB Black Hole and Natty’s Paste Wax. No prizes for guessing which engine was treated first.

BTW, I recently bought this creeper / chair, which really came in handy on this job. It has space for small articles / tools on the bottom, as well as a drinks holder…

After completing the waxing on the boat and the engines I decided to call it a day and started the fire for a braai that evening. I must say, the size of the surface areas was misleading and the polishing and waxing took much longer than I planned.

Some after shots taken on Saturday:

For the JHB guys, here are 2 pics showing what the view is like when standing on the boat…

On Sunday morning I slept a bit late, after nursing a few stiff muscles with Myprodols! After breakfast I washed all my pads and microfibers and hanged them to dry. I then moved my attention back to Lady Nise and finished off all the chrome tubing with Meguiars NXT Metal Polish, the trim, rubber and Vinyl with Adams VRT, and the windows with Sonax Glass Cleaner. I also cleaned the pontoons with a mild APC solution.

Some final after shots

I am very interested to see what the durability of the treatment will be like in the salty water and I think that cleaning the boat, after a trip on the lagoon will be much easier.

Thank you for looking!
Gorgeous results, but my shoulders ache just looking at the pics!

Thanks. Yeah, working with the machine above shoulder height really killed me. Luckily the Festool is lighter than most rotary polishers Bluebiggrin
WOW, thats extremely impressive Paul!!!! Big up's, the boat came out so nicely!!! ClapClap
Worshippy
Awesome job Paul!!! ClapClapClap

I presume you continued your post-snake visit detailing using the tried-and-trusted "Chameleon Technique"! (i.e. keeping one eye on the Festool and the other on the driveway)! Bluebiggrin

PS: Next time I come down to visit with the D3, I'll bring down the jetski for a package deal! Bluebiggrin
Nice work Paul...Boat it looking great Thumb
Nice to see something different. Great work though, thats a huge area or polish and clean.
Mamoth task!!! Well done.

I look forward to the longevity test.

Thanks Chris!
Jip, I was pretty nervous after that Icon9 For some reason I started thinking the vibration & noise of the polishers might "lure" the snakes Rofl

For your visit - use Kulula and I will give you Carn's number for the D3 and Jetski Bluebiggrin

Thanks calypso! Yes, I was wanting to do the boat since I read on a tin of coli that it was also suitable for marine and aero applications, but someone else can volunteer for a plane - I need to recover for the next year or so Bluebiggrin

Thanks springbok!
Hopefully we will put the boat to good use in December, and then I will do a follow-up.
Great job, its great to see detailing work on a boat for a change of pace. The only products I've used on boat gelcoat is the Megs #49 Super Duty Fiberglas Cleaner, #44 Heavy Duty Colour Restorer and Klasee AIO / SG for protection.
Very cool Paul ... Make a change from the normal car stuff Bluebiggrin
Awesome result

What kind of snake was that ?
Did the snake want a beer?

I'm no snake expert, but it looks like a mole snake to me. They are (supposed to be) non-venomous . . . . but (and I know one can get flamed for this) . . . My motto is: A good snake, is a dead snake! (Snakes invoke a primal fear in me!)

I think it might have been Paul's Brannas & Coke that caught the snake's attention! Big Grin

Thanks for the comments TOGWT! Vincent told me about a specific marine / gelcoat kit from Megs, but I did not have time to order new products and decided to try what I had. I am sure the marine specific products might be more effective and cheaper in the long run, if one plans to do more boats.

Jip, the neigbours also said it was a mole snake & non venomous, although I am still looking for a snake book to confirm this.

Bluebiggrin Lambchop is perhaps right - The Vitamin B&C is only used when the job is done. While there is work in progress the drink of choice is Windhoek Draught Bluebiggrin
Awsome Work there Paul Well done! I myself semi did a boat once and I know it's like doing 5 cars at once. Hard Hard work. But yeah you def nailed it and got that boat looking better now than I am sure the day it was bought.

Thanks for the compliment Vincent!
Thanks also for the advice and warning me about the amount of work, otherwise I would have started later and then would have battled to finish it!
Damn... That's a whole lot of surface area to cover! (Before you know it, your muscles will have muscles!)
Well played! Clap
