Morning guys.

I needed to replace the tyres on my vehicle this December and decided it was a good opportunity to do a good "spring" cleaning of the arches and rims.

Very hard work but just as rewarding when the job is done.... thing is I now spend 20mins just on the rims everytime I wash my car hahaha.

My method for the rims was as follows:
APC soak and brush agitation
Sonax extreme cleaner soak
Eucaluptus oil treatment on Tar (also found a wipe with the oil on the inside of the rims worked nicely)
clay
rinse
Wax

For the arches:
APC soak and plenty brush work
Rinse
Apc soak again and more brush work
rinse
Liberal application of bare bones.

Thanks woodie (i think) for that tip... works wonders for removing tar spots.

Does anyone have comments on their experiences with bare bones I was happy with the initial application but was hoping for more durablility it lasted about 1week (we did have a fair amount of rain though) It did work nicely on my engine compartment though.

Pleasure mate - I think it should be in every detailer's toolkit. It works wonders on tar, but keep it handy for removing any sticky or gummy residue.

Your rims and arches look great - really top notch work.

The only bit of advice from my side would be to clay before using the eucalyptus oil. I found that using the eucalyptus oil first left some oily residue which impacted on the effectiveness of the clay. Alternatively, you would need to ensure that all traces of the eucalyptus oil is properly removed before claying. This also applies when using the eucalyptus oil on paintwork - ensure that the surface is properly cleaned before using a polish or wax as it does impact on the effectiveness of the follow up product.


Forgot to add - on the wheel arches, I occasionally use Adam's Invisible Undercarriage Spray which is very similar to the CG Bare Bones spray. I find that the longevity isn't up to that of a dedicated trim dressing and is more useful as a spruce up product than a long term dressing.

I would recommend Aerospace 303 Protectant or Meguiars Ultimate Protectant instead of Bare Bones.

The hassle with most trim dressings is that they don't like water much (which is bad news for arches). Adams new Super VRT dressing is reportedly water resistant, but I haven't tried it myself as yet. 303 and the like all don't like getting wet either so it's very much a mixed bag in that regard.
Very nice work. Bare bones doesnt last that long, but it quick and easy to give a top up spray once in a while.

Woodie... would an apc wash be good enough to remove the eucaluptus residue?

Carn... any information on availablility of or some samples of the VRT dressing? I'm willing to do a trial and post results for everyone.

Yep - should be fine.

Not available from the local agent as yet. I do have some pricing on a US group buy but it's on the expensive side Hammerhead

I have also been a little disapointed in the longevity of Barebones.
The Sonus product I have is better.

I used the Shield APC in a 50% solution.
Yep, thats the one. I am not sure that you can get this brand in SA. I bought it off Cleanyourcar in the UK.
