I've been wanting to lay my hands on one of these for some time now, and finally got my chance!


A few befores prior to getting started...

Wheels were average




Car was covered in accumulated road grime but nothing too serious











First up the wheels and arches, this time around I gave the 3M Wheel & Tire Cleaner a go. Overall a very nice wheel cleaner with a refreshing citrus scent (beats the Sonax's pungent aroma).

Ez-Detail brush for the barrels


Detail brushes for the small, hard to reach areas




Mothers Wheel brush for the faces


Tires were scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush and 5:1 Carways APC.


Arches followed with 5:1 APC and various brushes before being rinsed thoroughly.


After the wheels the car was foamed with a mix of CWC and APC to remove as much crud as possible. Thereafter a typical 2 bucket wash followed before a final rinse in preparation for claying.

Clay of choice was Clay Magic's medium grade clay. With the owner working in an industrial area and the car being quite new, I was fairly certain it would have a fair amount of surface contaminants.

With the car clayed and clean I rinsed it off a final time before drying it inside the garage.

A quick inspection with the halogens and LED revealed the following...

A-Pillars



With taping and the inspection complete I got started on sorting out 2 prominent stone chips on the bonnet. The owner had touched them up but asked if I could flat them down and try to make them less visible.



First up a PTG reading to see what we have to work with


With 190 microns to spare I decided to go ahead and wet sand the area. A Mirka P2000 disc followed by a P4000 disc resulted in the following...


Thickness down 9 microns to 182


After compounding I was left with this (still to be refined with SIP when polishing the rest of the car)


Overall paint reduction was between 12 and 15um (191 down to 178 average) so I was happy with the results.


With the touch up completed I set about finding a useable combo for the paintwork correction. This was a single stage correction so I wanted to maximise the correction while still leaving a crisp finish. In the end I settled on Menzerna SIP on a green 3M compounding pad with a few drops of 85RE for extra working time.

Overall I think around 90% correction was achieved. There were still some minor remnants of deeper swirls and RIDS but I was happy with the correction levels.

Rear boot lid inserts in gloss plastic were corrected with Meguiars spot pads and SIP followed by 85RE.

With the correction work completed the car was pulled outside and washed down before being dried and returned to the garage for finishing off.

LSP was Raceglaze 55', trim got Satin prot and tires got Extreme Black dressing. Tailpipes were cleaned and polished with Raceglaze Alutech metal polish (inside and out) while the inside got scrubbed with an abrasive pad followed by Alutech polish. The exhaust back box that was visible under the rear bumper also got scrubbed up and cleaned.

Wanted to get your advise on this? Im currently using a couple different Hex Logic pads on my Shield DAS6 polisher and they really are not lasting that long. Im using them on the supplied backing plate which is fairly small in comparison to the pad!! They seem to be disintergrating really quickly around the edges and the rest of the pad seems to start falling apart after 3/4 details....

Is it the pad, Backing plate too small? Or is it fairly normal???

(Unfortunately i had the incorrct lense for the freaking camera so my pics are not that great... )

One or two quick pics before beginning:







Started by cleaning up the wheels, arches, badges, ect....



I then pulled the car into the garage and clayed it, this was a fairly quick and easy process, not too much contamination on the car!!! Once that was done i inspected the damage!!! And DAMN was there plenty!!!! Swirls all over the price!!!























I then started the correction phase, i had to make 3 passes on each panal to get some decent results!!! Started with CG N0.3 on a orange Hex Logic pad to remove the swirls, that left alot of marring, then refined that with Megs UC on a white polishing pad, followed by AG SRP on a black finishing pad for a bit of shine!! Results where decent!!! :smtp25 (i must say im looking forward to recieving my stock of Menz polishes, hopefully that will make these kind of details easier in the future!!!!)



















Finished!!!! I then gave the car a final wash to remove all the polish residue, ect... once it was dried i applied a layer of Sonax Extreme Paste Wax to the body and wheels!!! while that was setting i finished off the wheels, chrome sections, ect!!! Wax was then removed by hand!!! Some completed pics!!!

This car is a 2006 model with 56xxx km on the clock and I really try to keep it in good shape ever since I bought it in 2008.

It had a few parking lot type scratches on the sides and the black B-Pillars were showing some very bad swirls. The side mirrors (which Maldino painted black some time ago) also showed very bad swirling.

Some before pics:











I also decided to refit a part of the colour coded front lip which I damaged a while ago while I was busy. I replaced the very lower section with the stock OEM (black) part. While I was at it, I also removed the grills in order to clean them properly.




The engine bay was filthy from oil blown out through the filler cap. (I have replaced this cap twice but it somehow seems to keep doing this)





Getting to the real work - I again used the following products:
Megs Gold Class Shampoo
Adams Clay Kit
CG Cut 1.5
Menzerna PO 203S
Collinite 845
303 Aerospace Protectant
Raceglaze Leather Kit
Sonax Glass Cleaner

Vacuum & Clean Interior – 1 hour
Leather Treatment – 2 hours
Clay – 3 hours
Tape – 1.5 hours
Polish – 4 hours
Wax – 1 hour
Trim (including strip & fitment) - 3 hours
Wheels & Rims – 2 hours
Windows – 0.5 hours

I used the Raceglaze Leather Kit to transform the seats back to original condition. The seats were starting to show their age and I gave it 2 successive treatments. I am very impressed with this kit as the leather now feels soft (like new) again. Unfortunately this is difficult to capture on pics.

As usual wheels and arches were 1st on the list.

Brake calipers were a bit dirty as well

Sonax Extreme rim cleaner was applied liberaly and left to dwell


A detail brush was used to clean all the small areas and calipers...




Ez Wheel brush removing the majority of the dirt buildup from the wheels


Tyres were scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush and 5:1 APC


Arches cleaned with 5:1 APC and wheel back brushes





After rinsing the wheels were looking pretty neat and tidy


Calipers came up pretty well, albeit still suffering from slight discolouration





With the wheels clean I could now see a few small tar deposits which remained on the inner wheel barrels






These were taken care of with Sonax liquid tar remover and a microfiber towel...

With the wheels and arches cleaned up I turned my attention to washing the car. For this I used a combo of APC and Citrus Wash through a new el-cheapo foamer I have been playing with...


Not the greatest foam but significantly better than off the shelf foam guns


Dwell time was poor compared to the proper PA foamers



After rinsing all the loose grime from the paintwork it was time to sort out all the small details like trim...


Beadings


Rubber seals


Often overlooked areas




And emblems





After re-rinsing the car it was foamed again and washed before claying. Smartwax Smartclay did a good job of removing all surface contaminants



With the day drawing to a close I started on the tailpipes which needed some work.

Saturday started out by inspecting the paintwork both in the sun, as well as with my P7 LED torch.

Not wanting to waste any time I got started playing with a few combo's on the bonnet. In the end I wound up using a combination of SIP and P203S on the majority of the paintwork.

At this point in time the wind started to pick up and I was faced with having to apply the LSP whilst trying to dust the vehicle down...So FRUSTRATING!

In the end I simply couldn't do everything I wanted to for fear of inflicting fresh damage from the dust that had settled on the car. With the work completed I took a few final shots around the corner in the shade...

Overall I was happy with the correction levels achieved and think the car came out well despite the final few trying hours with the wind and dust. I think the upgrade to an enclosed unit is long overdue!

Before trying to finish off I gave the car a quick rinse and wash.


Wheelwax Extreme black was applied to the tires leaving me with this



Tailpieces were given a quick rework with some Raceglaze Alutech metal polish



At this point in time the wind started to pick up and I was faced with having to apply the LSP whilst trying to dust the vehicle down...So FRUSTRATING!

In the end I simply couldn't do everything I wanted to for fear of inflicting fresh damage from the dust that had settled on the car. With the work completed I took a few final shots around the corner in the shade...

Overall I was happy with the correction levels achieved and think the car came out well despite the final few trying hours with the wind and dust. I think the upgrade to an enclosed unit is long overdue!

I have been using standard products for a while now and they have all worked rather well. With my company becoming more mainstream I am finding I simply have not got time to waste on correction when I could be using equipment and product that will do it in half the time.

Carn - I left a voicemail for you. I want a DAS 6 polisher asap!

Products I currently like using:

- Megs Swirl X
- Chemical Boys Pro Cut
- Megs Ultimate Compound
- Megs Paint Cleaner (Makes the paint soooo smooth)

etc etc.

Now I know there are better products out there. So the task.

I mostly do one day enhancement details. Therefore I need products that will provide quick correction with minimal passes (NO FILLERS ALLOWED) and also give the paint a deep gloss to it. As for the polisher. I am looking at the DAS 6. If Carn likes it then I know it is good. I do not want a full on Rotary as then I have issues with my age and insurance. Not worth the hassle. With my Full Detail Package I have the time to play with correction. The Enhancement Detail gives me about 5 hours to get about 80% or more correction on an entire car. Its not enough.

I have a couple of waxes that I am exceptionally fond of. Colli, Gold Class and some Acrylic Sealants for extra sparkle. If you have recommendations please post up.

So. What do you guys recommend? I do not want to just buy what looks good only to find out that its not.

1 meguairs clay bar mild - 90% left
Menzerna SIP - 100ml
Menzerna FA - 100ml
3M painters tape

I purchased the machine nearly 2 years ago, used it once (on my bonnet) still runs strong though and is in great condition. I had a price of around R2200 for the lot but since checking in on this forum after a long while ive realised that price may not hold up. So if there is anyone interested I will consider any reasonable offer.
