I've got myself a Canon SX10-IS (compact super-zoom) and it works perfectly. That being said I do regret not making the jump to an SLR when given the chance having 'outgrown' the fixed lens SX10.
For R7k I would say something like the Canon 1000D with the 17-85 IS lens would be a good bet. I believe the included kit lens (18-55), while competent, is somewhat lacking in the visual quality department compared to the optional 18-75 IS lens
