From what I have read is you don't need an enormous light or millions of candlepower to highlight swirls and hazing. You need a light that is simialr in temperature to daylight (5700K I think) that is bright enough to highlight flaws but not so bright that it bleaches them out and you can't see them.
I have seen LED torches used to good effect before, I have some pics I will host and share with you shortly of them in action
